artwork: Louisville, KY - The Speed Art Museum is pleased to host an exhibition featuring paintings by local artist Gaela Erwin. Primarily a portrait artist, Erwin’s series of paintings of herself in the guise of Christian saints and martyrs are at the center of this exhibition. To contextualize the series, historical works from the Speed’s collection and works by Erwin contemporaries, Cindy Sherman and Kiki Smith will also be included. Gaela Erwin: Facing the Subject will be on display through June 25, 2006. Co-Curated by the artist and Speed Contemporary Art Curator, Julien Robson the exhibition offers an opportunity to explore her work in new and illuminating ways. Reflecting her interest in the human condition, Erwin’s images depict pain and spiritual transformation. Among the works of her artistic companions, her paintings reveal the layered complexity of her imagination and her deep understanding of the import of history upon the present. A national leader in arts education, serving over 30,000 children each year, the Speed Art Museum has repeatedly been voted Kentucky’s best museum. The Speed honors its mission to bring great art to our communities through its distinguished collections and as the Commonwealth’s number one venue for international art exhibitions.
