artwork: A new national magazine, American Art Collector, will be on newsstands at the end of September to challenge the way art lovers learn about fresh paintings on the market. “We’re launching this monthly magazine because our research told us both artists and collectors want previews, not reviews,” says Vincent Miller, publisher. “After-the-fact reviews are dead in this instant-news era.” The premiere October 2005 issue will have 224 pages in a glossy, 8 ” x 10 7/8” format. The majority of the pages will be devoted to previews of upcoming gallery shows around the country and advance looks at what is being painted in studios right now. “We’ll have ten times more previews than any other art magazine on the newsstand,” editor-in-chief Terri Dodd says. “The first issue alone will feature 68 artists and over 174 paintings right off the easel.” American Art Collector’s research showed that 63% of the best-selling artists have never been covered by New York-based critics. “The sooner we can tell collectors about new paintings coming onto the market, the better chance they will be able to assemble a focused collection of the exact artworks they want,” Miller says. “We also found that learning about an artist-on-the-fast-track before the general market does is worth an average of $4,000 a painting.” Featured artists will include Alan Feltus, Daniel Sprick, Koo Schadler, Duncan Hannah, R. Kenton Nelson, Peter Poskas III, Hung Liu, and Will Wilson. “Since our reader subscriber base is centered around the serious, informed art collector, we wanted to provide columns on art appraisals, insider collecting secrets, art insurance, and museum-worthy buying strategies that they can’t get elsewhere,” Terri Dodd says. “You’ll also see more coast-to-coast coverage because the critical mass of the collecting market is no longer solely in Manhattan.” “Until someone figures out how to hang a performance video on the wall, someone needs to cover the serious/traditional art market in greater depth and with a wider scope of geography,” Miller explains. American Art Collector is the seventh magazine title to be launched by Miller’s publishing company, International Artist Publishing, Inc. (The eight-year-old International Artist magazine was recently voted the world’s No. 1 art magazine for practicing artists.) The company is also one of the largest publishers of art books in the world. www.AmericanArtCollector.com
