TOKYO, JAPAN.-The Setagaya Art Museum presents today Between Drawing and Sculpture: The Prints of Isamu Wakabayashi. The exhibition introduces specially selected prints by Isamu Wakabayashi along with small sculptures. Until his untimely death one year ago, Wakabayashi was one of the most important contemporary sculptors in Japan, known for highly intelligent work, based on a deep appreciation of nature, constructed with such materials as steel, copper, and lead. Wakabayashi is famous as a sculptor, but he also made a considerable number of prints, over 700 during his lifetime. He invented original techniques unlike those of ordinary printmakers, for example, adding color to finished prints and making them into entirely different works. His prints go beyond the usual concepts of printmaking, showing his talent as a plastic artist. This exhibition fully reveals the fascination of Wakabayashi's print work by presenting his major prints, works on paper created with printmaking processes, and small sculptures related to prints.
