Hybrid Harvest: Contemporary Native American Art
Saturday, 27 August 2005 10:35
FULLERTON, CA.-Cal State Fullerton Main Art Gallery will present Hybrid Harvest: Contemporary Native American Art . Hybrid Harvest: Contemporary Native American Art includes the work of five contemporary Native American artists: Carm Little Turtle, James Luna, Shelley Niro, Preston Singletary and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. All five artists work in media that were unknown to Indians before they interacted with Europeans and EuroAmericans (art glass, photography, video, installation, oil painting), yet their artwork also makes reference to the “traditional.” The exhibition was curated by Cheryl Groch-Schriefer and Beth R. Solomon These artists, “many with long careers behind them, address issues of cultural cross-pollination and stereotypical thinking as these both endure and change. In works that call on antiquity and the present, they bring us their history and their legends, their insights, their sorrows and their joys.” (From the catalogue essay by Zena Perlstone).
