artwork: COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.-GL STRAND presents Per Kirkeby - Reflection. As a point of departure the exhibition is focusing on the extensive literature that Kirkeby has written about other artists as well as colleagues. Artists like August Rodin, Paul Gauguin, Edward Weie, J. F. Willumsen, Vincent van Gogh, Alberto Giacometti and Edward Munch are among those whom Kirkeby has devoted his utmost dedication and interest. One often finds that Kirkeby is dealing with strong autobiographically and existential themes, moreover, pure visual technicalities are also explored, resulting in surprising new perspectives. In this way, GL STRAND will approach Per Kirkeby in a complete new manner, by examining him both as an artist and as a human being. In addition to Kirkeby’s complete new artworks, the exhibition will also show a wide selection of his paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs accompanied by some of the great profiles which have inspired him: Alberto Giacometti, Nicolai Abildgaard, Tal R, Edvard Weie, J. F. Willumsen. The exhibition will emerge as a crossover between tradition and interpretation, as a visual field created on the basis of Per Kirkeby’s insightful literature. The exhibition will thus scrutinize Kirkeby’s direct and attentive approach to some of art history’s significant works of art, which he has experienced both as a frequent museums visitor and as an exceptionally art interested citizen in Denmark and other surrounding countries.
