artwork: RENO, NV– The Nevada Museum of Art will present Modernism in American Silver: 20th-Century Design, highlighting more than 200 outstanding works, from art moderne to contemporary, by the foremost designers of production silver. This exhibition showcases the aesthetic richness and cultural significance of modern silver design from 1925 to 2000. Modernism in American Silver: 20th-Century Design will be on exhibit through May 14, 2006 at the Nevada Museum of Art. From teaspoons to cocktail shakers, Modernism in American Silver examines the influence of modernism upon industrially produced silverware made in the United States. The exhibit explores the economic and cultural factors that influenced silver design and charts the stylistic design history of modern American silver. Organized into seven thematic areas, the exhibit offers insight to the connections between European modernism and émigré designers, the effect of 1930’s streamlining on flatware and the impact of space age imagery in post war silver design, as well as the role of the designer-craftsman in industry and the advent in America of architect-designed silver. Among the featured designers are Eliel Saarinen, Erik Magnussen, Robert Venturi, Michael Graves, Elsa Peretti and Richard Meier. Many of the featured objects are from the Dallas Museum of Art's Jewel Stern American Silver Collection, which includes more than 400 examples of modernist silver. “This exhibition showcases the best of modern American silver and silver design, making it a perfect fit for a museum located in a state so rich in silver mining history,” said Steven High, CEO and Director of the Nevada Museum of Art. “I can not think of a better way to launch a year dedicated to contemporary design, than with this landmark exhibition.” For 2006, the Nevada Museum of Art will present two exhibitions focused on twentieth century design, beginning with Modernism in American Silver (February 18 through May 14, 2006) and followed by 100 Years - 100 Chairs: An Exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum (May 27 through October 1, 2006). 100 Years - 100 Chairs highlights different periods of industrial furniture design from 1899 to 1999.
