artwork: New York- An exhibition of paintings by Posoon Park Sung — sensitive and haunting canvases in a magical realist style at the June Kelly Gallery . The works will remain on view through February 7. The exhibition, entitled Anam Ċara, Celtic for “soul friend,” reveals Park Sung as a consummate dreamer as well as a symbolist whose intense visual unities are both visionary and timeless. They reflect her skillful following of the involved processes of a mind toiling in the angst between emotion and experience. Park Sung translates existence, its beauty and its trials into a vocabulary of the visual imagination, as she follows the windings of her thoughts without chasing the fleeting shades of cerebral processes into blind alleys. Art writer Jonathan Goodman wonders whether Park Sung, who is Korean, “creates works that are emblems of her Asian background, despite her deliberations in a postmodern art world.” For the artist, he continues, “the connection to Asian art cannot be found in her materials, which are regularly acrylic on canvas. Instead, it is the contemplative call of her poetic configurations that link her to a non-western inheritance.” Goodman writes that her “figures dream their way into spaces made extraordinary by their intuitive and contemplative energies, which loom large in the light given them in their context…. Park Sung’s magical atmospheres relate a deep-seated conviction that art exists to express its own nature, intended not to compensate but rather to assert a lyrical mind that stands of its own accord.” Park Sung lives and works in New York City and Tampa, Florida. She received a bachelor’s degree from Hong-Ik University, College of Art in Seoul, Korea, and a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. Park Sung has participated in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Korea. Her work is represented in corporate and private collections, including the University of Tampa, Florida, Benihana Corporation, Miami, Florida, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York.
