Hong Kong.- The Zee Stone Gallery is proud to present “Homage”, an exhibition of collages by Hemlock from 13 May until 13 June 2011. "Homage" pays tribute to the men and women who ruled Hong Kong in the first decade of the 21st Century.  The works, presented in the form of limited edition prints, are collages largely composed of ‘found’ material, especially photographs, mainly drawn from mass media. Viewers looking for influences may initially see Gilbert and George or Andy Warhol. Structurally, the compositions tend to employ tools of heraldry or religious iconography, such as symmetry and repetition in support of a central figure of veneration.

This framework is used to present juxtapositions, including motifs seemingly at odds with the apparent devotional focus of the piece. One recurring example is images of women, frequently pensive, usually from a different era; another is bold contrasts of colour. The result is frequently tension or contradiction, both visual and between images’ wider contexts, which the viewer may perceive as amusing, unsettling or simply devoid of meaning. Hemlock is the pen name (and fictional creation) of the author of the Big Lychee and former Hemlock’s Diary websites and an appreciator of satire.  All proceeds go to the Chi Heng Foundation to help Aids-impacted children in China.

The Zee Stone Gallery, established in 1991, exhibits a wide range of contemporary artists from mainland China working in both Chinese ink and colour on paper and oil on canvas. The paintings shown in the gallery mirror the rich diversity of contemporary Chinese art: from abstract landscapes to photorealistic portraits, from paintings on rice paper by traditionally trained Chinese masters, to exciting new work in oil, acrylic and mixed media by a younger generation of artists. The gallery also exhibits paintings by artists from Vietnam and Burma, as well as a number of international artists. They continue to expand their repertoire as they aim to show contemporary Asian art to a wider audience, both in Hong Kong and internationally. Regular exhibitions are held in their spacious ground floor gallery located on Hollywood Road in Central, the premier business and entertainment district of Hong Kong.
