LONDON - In its second year at gallery:space, Salon Locale 08 is a showcase of local artists, featuring photographs, paintings and drawings, in a meditation on urbanism and domesticity. On exhibition 8 May through 29 June, 2008. Kate Rowles’ installation examines the physical marks of memories (and art) in the domestic space while Linsey Bell’s black and white photographs are evocative studies of dust and the female body. Anna Lewis explores the same theme by stitching kitchen cloths with images from celebrity magazines, a witty and playful object with many layers of meaning. Going further into interiority, Katie Orr uses the grammar of doodles in her obsessive pencil drawings. Andy Wicks’ abstract paintings of circles dripping appear comparatively open yet both share a sense of intimacy. Richard McConnell’s elegant, but quirky polaroids reveal a lesser-known urban world in which detail is just as important as the bigger picture, while Richard Watkins’ geometric prints take another step towards abstraction. In her large scale works Agnieszka Milcka re!ects on the theme of architecture, illustrating a density so intense in detail as to be uncomfortable. On the other hand, Harvey Woodward’s blurry street scene reminds one of a hazy wet London day. ![]() Maito Jobbe-Duval and Kathryn Politis’ photographic assemblage is an intimate record of a day in Dalston whereas Grace Gelder’s photographs show in vivid colors and epic expansiveness the strange urban underbelly, reminding us of the disturbing character of of what lies beyond our cities. Further out are Jorge Lizalde and Graham Carrick’s land, and sky-scapes. Jorge Lizalde captures the evocativeness of a penetrating sky in reference to his grandfather’s gentle watercolours, while Graham Carrick’s natural scenes are at once whimsical, arresting and disturbing. To take yet another twist, Ried Peppard and Kaoru Murakami discover the strange world of urban animals. Reid Peppard’s shields remind one of proudly displayed hunting trophies, but in a curious twist are in fact small unliked vermin. In a different vein, Kaoru Murakami’s decorative garden rabbit seem to be not only misplaced, but from a fantasy land altogether. gallery:space is a not for profit public gallery.
