Chicago, IL - Gallery KH is pleased to present Still Life: Mignonette Yin Cheng, Honore Lee and Carol Stewart, opening June 5 through July 10, 2009.   An opening night cocktail reception with the artists is scheduled for Friday, June 5, 2009, 5-8PM. Located in the heart of the River North Arts District, Gallery KH presents an outstanding collection of significant contemporary artists working in a variety of styles and media.

Honor Lee’s complex ideas derived from the ordinary are the foundation for the artwork the Michigan artist.  Simple forms such as bowls, sticks and studio tools, lead themselves as universal visual references, yet possess a deeper meaning as objects that endure over time.  On that level, a rich, symbolic meaning is found.  Typically working on a heavily prepared surface with oil media such as oil sticks, oil pastels and of course paint, Lee often adds collage elements along with words and numbers in a randomly planned manner; the final array of symbols and objects acknowledges the act of discovery. What is concealed and alternately revealed is a central theme.

Carol Stewart often finds her inspiration in gardens around the world; from London to Vancouver to St. Louis. For Stewart, the sudden play of light on a surface and the interaction of colors and patterns are what she strives to record. Her richly detailed paintings form a tapestry of texture and color.  Bright, bold, never dull and never the same.

“I always paint from life. My work is about my sense of place. The changes in light and color over time and the spirit of where I am are not things I can find in photographs.” –Carol Stewart

Mignonette Yin Cheng , has been described as a master of close harmonies who gives us a subtle yet strong evocation of hills and buildings, flowers and tables. She captures the essence of place or thing through her sure sense of scale and her skill at using color to indicate the quality of light and fullness of three-dimensional form.

“I can remember, as a child, lining up on a beach in Southern China with my
brothers and sisters, our backs to the water. My father then asked us all to
look at the sunset, upside down, between our legs. This "new version" of the
world has stayed with me. It is a feeling that I try to capture in each of
my paintings, a sense of looking at a familiar scene with new eyes.” - Mignonette Yin Cheng
