Santa Monica, CA - The Harris & Ruble Gallery, Hollywood's newest location for fine art and photography, will host an opening on April 2nd from 5-9 pm of “New Works”, the playful surrealism of Dirk Kortz, filmmaker, poet and painter of extraordinary imagery. The exhibition will then be on view until May 1st 2011. “Dirk expresses a fantastical viewpoint of the world in a seductive manner that draws us in” says Marcella Ruble, curator. “Dirk Kortz's paintings evoke Freud's theory that humor and dreams allow us to tap into our unconsciousness. His images penetrate our defenses of societal expectations, thereby allowing our unconscious self to joyfully suspend the oppression of reality. He is an elegant trickster."

Dirk Kortz was born in New Jersey. He grew up there and in upstate New York on the St. Lawrence River. He has been drawing and painting all his life. He studied Painting, Film and Creative Writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J. for two years, then moved to San Francisco. He graduated from San Francisco State University and did graduate work in Film. His films have won numerous awards at festivals around the country. His writings have been published in many poetry and literary journals. He spent 15 years in the film industry writing screenplays before deciding to paint full time. His paintings, collages, assemblages and wood carvings have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the country. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Harris & Ruble Gallery reflects the eclecticism and avocation of its proprietors, Marcella Ruble and Alan Harris, who also use their historically significant building to house their eponymous legal practice. Marcella Ruble and Alan Harris bought the Hollywood building on Santa Monica Boulevard in 2009 and converted its rotunda entrance into an art gallery. Ruble, an artist herself, has studio space in the building, and did the bulk of the work converting the space as well as lining up exhibitions.
