Hong Kong.- "Home-made Colors: The Inaugural Exhibition of the Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society" will be on display at the Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) from 25 March – 15 May 2011. Curated by Paris-based artist Lin Minggang, the exhibition features more than 50 works by twenty-two contemporary Chinese artists working in oil. The exhibition is jointly organized by the University Museum and Art Gallery and the Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society. It is the Society’s inaugural exhibition and also forms part of the University of Hong Kong’s centennial celebration program. The twenty-two participating members include well-established masters as well as promising young artists.

They express their feelings of “Home” with dynamic colours, aiming to establish a unique style of oil painting in Hong Kong. On display are over fifty oil paintings in which the artists adopt traditional oil techniques to depict animated portraits and landscapes of Mainland China, Hong Kong and overseas. Their styles are broad, including Impressionism, Realism, Abstractism and Surrealism. They imply that the authors are most influenced by their Chinese cultural background despite their use of traditional Western methodologies. Therefore, they use the medium of oil to present the harmonious spirits of Confucian life. Audiences will empathize with these pieces, which are filled with humanistic feelings. The Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society, was established by Lin Minggang, and endeavors to connect with the enthusiastic oil painters within the Hong Kong art circuit, as well as organizing joint exhibitions to promote the art of oil painting in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery is housed in the Fung Ping Shan Building and the lower three storeys of the T T Tsui Building. The Fung Ping Shan Building was donated to The University of Hong Kong by Mr Fung Ping-shan in 1932 for a Chinese book library. In 1953, the building was converted into the Fung Ping Shan Museum of Chinese art and archaeology. With its extension to the T T Tsui Building in 1996, the Museum changed its title to the "University Museum and Art Gallery". A new wing of the Museum was built with a generous donation by Dr T T Tsui, and was officially opened in November 1996. Since its inception in 1953, the UMAG has received continuous support from donors, artists, collectors and the University. Its collections have grown to over one thousand items, including Chinese antiquities, notably bronzes, ceramics and paintings. The University Museum and Art Gallery aspires to generate artistic and cultural experiences that are accessible to people in all walks of life. We seek to encourage greater appreciation of the arts and nurture a stronger sense of cultural values within the Hong Kong community. Visit the museum's web site at  ... http://www.hku.hk/hkumag
