Braunstein/Quay Gallery features Ursula Schneider ~ The River

San Francisco, CA - The large-scale paintings by Ursula Schneider are based on her observations of the Hudson River, the architecture of the Indian Point Energy Center, a nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York , and the intrusion of industrial barges on the river’s serenity. On exhibition at Braunstein/Quay Gallery, 430 Clementina / San Francisco, CA 94103 from 25 June through 1 August, 2009. Reception Saturday, June 27, 2009, 3:00 - 5:00pm  

In 1997 Schneider developed a technique for producing panels, made of four layers of sheer nylon fabric laminated with urethane, that were strong, flexible, absorbent as well as translucent. With her unique process of painting with pure pigments and a keen eye for formal concerns Schneider translates water and reflections into intercepting bands of color.   Basing each painting on a specific time and season the artist brings movement and depth to each scene.

Ursula Schneider received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1972. She has been represented by Braunstein/Quay Gallery in San Francisco since 1974.   She exhibits with A.I.R. Gallery in New York, NY.   She is a professor at Sarah Lawrence College.   Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Forth Worth, TX, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, as well as in the Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum.

Founded by Ruth Braunstein in 1961, the Braunstein/Quay Gallery moved to its current location at 430 Clementina in 1999. Recognized as a "cross over" gallery, Braunstein/Quay Gallery was one of the first in the nation to exhibit sculptural clay, fiber art, art furniture, and glass alongside paintings, drawings, and sculpture in a fine arts environment. The gallery's reputation is based on discovering and promoting Bay Area regional artistic talent along with providing quality art for private, corporate, and museum collections.

The ACCESS Program was initiated in 1988 in an effort to continue to support and encourage artists who, while working at a high level, have yet to affiliate with a gallery in San Francisco.
