Washington, DC -- Robert Freeman’s bold, colorful paintings of well-heeled African-Americans at sophisticated gatherings have been featured at Zenith Gallery in solo and group shows for almost 30 years, most recently with works by Romare Bearden, Benny Andrews, Alma Thomas and Richard Yarde in the Freedom Place Collection exhibit in September 2007. His signature style incorporates overlapping shapes, strong gestures and subjects crowding to the front and edges of his canvases, sometimes taking on an aggressive, in-your-face stance with the viewer. Many of the pieces in this show, he says, were sparked by a recent visit to Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum where he became fascinated by Rembrandt’s masterful use of light.

Freeman’s art is widely collected and his paintings have been exhibited at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Newport Art Museum, Zenith Gallery and in galleries in New York, New England, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and beyond. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Freeman lived in Ghana and Ethiopia for 10 years during his childhood, and later moved to Washington, DC where he attended Calvin Coolidge High School and then Howard University. He received his BFA and MFA degrees from Boston University, and settled in that area where he is a prominent artist and respected teacher. Freeman was artist-in-residence at Noble and Greenough School from 1981 until his recent retirement, and a lecturer and instructor at Harvard from 1988 to 1994.
