Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum Attendance Increases

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL - In the three years since the new Holocaust History Museum opened to the public, more than 344,240 people have visited from Israel and abroad. This also represents a 120% increase over the same period last year.

The opening of the Museum has led to an unprecedented interest in visiting Yad Vashem, particularly among Israelis; including many who had previously visited Yad Vashem and have come to see the new museum.

A decade in the making, the new Holocaust History Museum combines the best of Yad Vashem’s expertise, resources and state-of-the-art exhibits to take Holocaust remembrance well into the 21st century .

The new Holocaust History Museum occupies over 4,200 square meters, mainly underground. Both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, it presents the story of the Shoah from a unique Jewish perspective, emphasizing the experiences of the individual victims through original artifacts, survivor testimonies and personal possessions. At the end of the Museum’s historical narrative is the Hall of Names—a repository for the Pages of Testimony of millions of Holocaust victims, a memorial to those who perished.

Since opening to the public, Yad Vashem has been inundated by requests from groups and individuals who wish to visit the Museum. To accommodate this spike in interest, Yad Vashem has extended visiting hours during the Passover holiday (April 9th - 16th, 2009) from 09:00 - 20:00. Entrance to Yad Vashem and the new museum is free of charge, and it is recommended to come in the afternoon hours, when there are less visitors.
