Artists Denise Burge of Cincinnati, OH, Ardyth Davis of White Stone, VA, John W. Lefelhocz of Athens, OH, and Jen Swearington of Asheville, NC are recognized individually in their approaches to the use of fiber in contemporary art.  They use visual and stylistic vocabularies that broaden the approaches to material, pattern, texture and technique.

Fiber-Optic highlights the aesthetic relationships of these artists as they expand the expressive boundaries of materials used within fine art.  Not confined by applied-art traditions, their works often include not only materials commonly employed in the development of quilts and tapestries, but unorthodox substances that heighten the conceptual basis in their work.

“The Arts Center is very excited to present the work of these artists,” says Curator Matthew Mangold.  “Their techniques are stunning along with being thought provoking in their subject matter.”

The exhibition will continue through Nov. 5 in The United Company Contemporary Regional Gallery on Level Three of the museum.

The Arts Center is a Partner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a member of the American Association of Museums, the Virginia Association of Museums and the Southeastern Museums Conference.
