The paintings chosen for this exhibition come directly from the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust. This marks the first release of historical work from the Trust since the artist’s death early in 2004 and will be a welcome opportunity to view the dynamic range and vibrancy of the artist’s distinctive output. Generated over sixty years of dedicated practice, Barns-Graham’s oeuvre charts a particular history of modernism as it developed in St Ives from the 1940’s onwards. Her critical role is emerging now as wider audiences are exposed to her artistic achievement. With two Tate exhibitions, key exhibitions at Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, national touring exhibitions and the publication of the book “A Studio Life’ written by Lynne Green in 2001, a fascinating picture has emerged of this intensely private painter.
