Tuesday, 21 August 2007 00:45
Lexington, KY - The UK Art Faculty Exhibition features 18 UK artists presenting work in ceramics, fiber arts, furniture, new media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Guest Curator Carl Solway, the prominent Cincinnati gallerist, spent hours meeting with the artists and has put together an exhibition that reflects profound themes of love, loss, life, and ultimately, survival. He turned to philosopher William James for the exhibition’s title: The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it.
A sampler of the exhibition gives some sense of its scope. Avid traveler Dennis “Bones” Carpenter will show photo collages from Morocco and Portugal that capture some of the romance associated with foreign journeys. George Szekely exhibits diaristic artist books that he created during his mother’s illness. Arturo Sandoval is creating a new fiber piece, to hang from the 27-foot-high ceiling to the floor in the center of the museum. Hui Chi Lee’s People’s Staircase, constructed of Plexiglas and film, questions our quest to climb to higher levels of status and acquisition.
The exhibition will also feature a series of eight woodcuts by beloved faculty member Ross Zirkle, who recently lost his fight with cancer.
The exhibition and accompanying publication will showcase the importance of the university setting in fostering new artists and allowing research and creative opportunities for professional artists. The Friends of the UK Art Museum and the Efroymson Fund have made this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue possible. On exhibition September 1 – December 23, 2007. Visit : www.uky.edu/ArtMuseum
