TAMPA, FL – The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum | Institute for Research in Art (USF CAM) is pleased to announce that it will receive a significant gift of photographs by the internationally renowned pop artist Andy Warhol. The gift comes to USF CAM from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, under the auspices of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program. This unprecedented program honors the 20th anniversary of the Warhol Foundation by making substantial gifts of Warhol’s photographic works to university and college museums and collections across the United States.
USF CAM will receive 106 color Polaroids and 50 black & white gelatin silver prints produced by the artist between 1970 and 1987. The prints are primarily portraits from Warhol’s social milieu. Warhol frequently used these types of photographic image as a basis for his larger paintings and prints. This gift will allow greater access to Warhol’s work for scholars, students and the community.
The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum maintains the permanent collection for the University of South Florida. Established in the early 1960s with key purchases from the University’s nascent exhibitions program, the collection currently holds over 5,000 objects of contemporary graphics, works on paper, sculpture multiples, and photography. Included in the collection are three of Warhol’s most iconic prints, Marilyn, Mao Tse-Tung and Jackie II. These three prints have been loaned to museums throughout the world, including a major exhibition of pop art, American Pop, curated for the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, South Korea, in 2002. CAM is accredited by the American Association of Museums and met specific criteria stipulated by the Warhol Foundation.
