The Bronx Museum of the Arts will show 'Street Art, Street Life: From the 1950s to Now'

BRONX, NY.- The Bronx Museum of the Arts will present Street Art, Street Life: From the 1950s to Now, on view Sunday, September 14, 2008 to January 25, 2009. From the Boulevards of Paris to the Vertical Canyons of Beijing, Street Art Street Life examines the vanguard’s fascination with the street for inspiration, subject matter, a stage, and even the raw materials of their art making. Robert Frank, William Klein, Jacques de la Villeglé, Yoko Ono, Vito Acconci, Nikki S. Lee and Joseph Bueys are among those represented by street photography, documentation of performances and videos.

New works by Xaviera Simmons and Fatimah Tuggar, co-commissioned by the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Public Art Fund, will be on view. As well as, a special commission by India’s Blank Noise Project that will make its U.S. debut.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition on Sunday, September 14, there will a giant street party in front of the Museum on the Grand Concourse. With DJs, break dancers, family activities, as well as a market of local artisans.

Street Art, Street Life is made possible by the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award, JPMorgan Chase Foundation, a MetLife Foundation Museum and Community Connections grant and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support has been provided by the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, the New York Council for the Humanities and Etant donnés: The French-American Fund for Contemporary Art.
