artwork: Steve Graber Reina MercedesWichita, KS - Visitors to the Wichita Art Museum will have to do a double take when looking at Regions of Illusion: The Drawings of Steven Graber on view August 25 through December 31.  The Lawrence, KS artist’s meticulous and sensitive charcoal drawings are so finely graded and rendered, they resemble black and white photographs.

Depicting imaginary landscapes through realism that borders on abstraction, Graber’s drawings transport viewers to another place, another time.

“I try to convey an inner peace and harmony by creating a world made of light and mood – one that is timeless and deeply personal,” explains artist Steve Graber.  “A place where imagination is free and boundless; where the sanctity of the individual soul is cherished and preserved, untouched by outside judgment or desecrated by society’s labels.”

His work graphically captures mood, grandeur, and emotion, holding one’s interest long after the initial impact has diminished.  The interplay between light and dark, highlight and shadow, is something every serious photographer seeks, though these are not photographs.

Graber’s award-winning works of art have captured the imagination of numerous private collectors across the United States and Europe.  His work may also be found in various corporate and museum collections.

The Wichita Art Museum opened in 1935.  It is home to The Roland P. Murdock Collection, one of the premier collections of American Art in the country.  The Museum is proud to be supported through public and private funds, owned by the City of Wichita and managed by a private entity.
