St. Louis, MO - The Saint Louis Art Museum announces the July 21 opening of Recent Acquisitions from the Textile Collection, an exhibition of ten textiles acquired by the Museum in the last five years that represent a broad range of cultures and time periods. Featured works include a luxurious late 18th to early 19th-century Kashmir shawl, a Cambodian silk wrapper known as a phaa nung that measures more than 100 inches wide, and a 19th-century embroidered raffia skirt worn by African royalty as a symbol of prestige.
Other selected acquisitions represent 20th-century technological and design developments. Several Japanese textiles made from inventive combinations of old traditions and new technologies will be on view, as well as a stylized floral-designed tablecloth attributed to Peter Behrens, a leading designer of the Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk in Munich, Germany.
Curated by Zoe Annis Perkins , textile conservator, Recent Acquisitions from the Textile Collection will be on view in the William A. and Carolyn C. McDonnell Textile Gallery (100) through January 21, 2007.
