Museum of Fine Arts shows Douglas Deihl Abstracts

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The exhibit Abstract Paintings by Douglas Deihl  is on view through April 13 in the Community Gallery at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts.

Deihl’s paintings are rich with color and texture created by many layers of oil paint on wood panels. The layers create a sense of space and depth, and within each work are shapes which are evocative of microscopic organisms or nebulae. Although the paintings are compact, they suggest the vastness of space or other worlds beyond our immediate view. The artist has left the paintings untitled because he prefers to allow the art to speak for itself.  

Deihl is the director of Skinner’s American Indian and Ethnographic Art department.

He is also an expert appraiser of Native American and Western art on the PBS TV series Antiques Roadshow.

The Museum of Fine Arts is located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street off Chestnut Street in downtown Springfield. Free parking is available in the Edwards Street parking lots. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and college students, $5 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. Springfield residents are free with proof of address.
