George Eastman House Collection at the Speed Art Museum

Louisville, Kentucky - The Speed Art Museum brings to Louisville images that changed the way we view the world. With over 200 iconic works drawn from the world-renowned collections of the George Eastman House, this exhibition explores photography from 1839 daguerreotype to September 11, 2001. On display through September 16, 2007, the exhibition will also include restored and archived film clips from before 1923.
Visitors will see some of this country’s most important images, including Mathew Brady’s photographs of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Capa’s D-Day, Omaha Beach and Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother. The exhibition also includes some of the most visually stunning images ever captured on film by prominent photographers Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Weston and many others.
The film component of the exhibition includes film clips, celebrity portraits, motion picture stills, lobby cards and movie posters.
The Best of Photography and Film from George Eastman House Collection was organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film.
A national leader in arts education, serving over 30,000 children each year, the Speed Art Museum has repeatedly been voted Kentucky’s best museum and is considered one of the top ten sites each Kentuckian should visit. The Speed honors its mission to bring great art to our communities through its distinguished collections and as the Commonwealth’s number one venue for international art exhibitions.Rated one of the top ten audio guides in the country by MSNBC.COM, “Passport to the Speed,” offers insight into selected works in the collection, and is available for free at the Museum’s Welcome Center. The Speed Art Museum: Highlights from the Collection, a new companion guide to the Speed’s distinguished collection will be available December 2007.
The Speed Art Museum is located at 2035 South Third Street in Louisville. Other features of the museum include a hands-on Art Learning Center for families, a café and gift shop. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays. The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, provides operational support funding for the Speed Art Museum with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
