The Southwest Museum Celebrates Its Centennial
Los Angeles, CA - The Southwest Museum of the American Indian invites you to come celebrate its 100th birthday this year with fun family activities, special behind-the-scenes tours, in-depth lectures, and artist shows and sales. Also open is the ethnobotanical garden and museum store. All events and admission to the museum are free. The Southwest Museum and Museum Store are open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
Founded in 1907 by Charles Lummis and members of the Southwest Society, the Southwest Museum is the oldest museum in the City of the Angels. Dedicated to the study and exploration of the history and culture of the American Indian, the museum fosters a deeper knowledge and appreciation of diverse indigenous peoples. The Southwest contains one of the finest collections of Native American art encompassing a span of more than 2,000 years.

The Southwest Museum holds one of the nation’s most important museum, library, and archive collections related to the American Indian. In addition, it has extensive holdings of pre-Hispanic, Spanish colonial, Latino, and Western American art and artifacts. For nearly one hundred years it has supported research, publications, exhibitions, and other educational activities to advance the public’s understanding and appreciation of the Americas, with particular emphasis on the western United States and Mesoamerica.
