Baron Rouge, LA - The Irene W. Pennington Planetarium announced that beginning on April 29 it will show the new, digitally animated alternative rock music show, SonicVision, every Saturday night at 8:00 PM. SonicVision was developed by the American Museum of Natural History in collaboration with Moby and in association with MTV2. The 38-minute show blends music from many of today’s best-known artists with the vibrant visual artistry of animators and video artists to create a fully immersive program. “SonicVision is truly a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. This is the type of entertainment normally enjoyed by audiences in New York, Denver, and Chicago, and we’re very pleased to be able to present it here,” said planetarium director Jon Elvert. “SonicVision is the perfect show for those who haven’t attended a planetarium showing in a while. This will introduce an entirely new experience,” said Elvert. Since it opened in 2003, the planetarium has converted to a sophisticated digital projection system comparable to those at the nation’s largest planetariums such as the Rose Center in New York City and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. The system has a three-dimensional color database containing more than 100,000 stars, thus enabling audiences to move into, around, and through three-dimensional environments. This technology also gives planetarium staff the ability to re-create virtually any phenomenon as a digital simulation and to manipulate objects in real time. In addition, the 60-foot dome includes a six-channel, 15,000-watt 5.1 surround-sound system of the highest quality, ideal for a show such as SonicVision.
SonicVision’s stunning visuals will accompany the show’s playlist, which includes Radiohead, U2, Coldplay, Queens of the Stone Age, Stereolab, Audioslave, White Zombie, Fischerspooner, the Flaming Lips, Spiritualized, David Bowie, Boards of Canada, Prodigy, David Byrne and Brian Eno, Goldfrapp, and Zwan. SonicVision is made possible by generous sponsorship and technology support from Sun Microsystems. Located at 100 South River Road in downtown Baton Rouge, LASM features fine art exhibitions, hands-on art and science exhibits, an Egyptian tomb exhibit, Louisiana’s only Challenger Learning Center, and the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium. Visit the Louisiana Art and Science Museum
