Gateshead, UK - An exciting new exhibition, set to amaze, intrigue and astonish visitors opens at the Shipley Art Gallery this month. Coming to the Shipley direct from its run at the V&A in London, Out of the Ordinary features new installations from artists Olu Amoda, Naomi Filmer, Lu Shengzhong, Susan Collis, Yoshihiro Suda, Annie Cattrell and Anne Wilson. On view 20 March - 1 June, 2008.

Traditional techniques including glassmaking, paper-cutting, embroidery, wood-carving, lace-making and marquetry are used in new and unexpected ways, pushing the boundaries of our perceptions of craft.

Amy Barker, curator of the Shipley Art Gallery says:

We are delighted to be the first touring venue for this extremely popular V&A and Crafts Council exhibition. It is an opportunity for the Shipley to show contemporary art which challenges our ideas of craft, art and design. The artists featured have created truly spectacular works and the exhibition will generate much discussion and debate.

All the artists in the exhibition take inspiration from the everyday, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. The unusual and beautifully crafted installations to be shown include an apparently paint-splattered ladder which has been inlaid with mother of pearl and a seven-metre high crimson cascade made using traditional Chinese paper-cutting methods.

The Shipley Art Gallery is owned by Gateshead Council and managed on its behalf by Tyne & Wear Museums.
