artwork: Tony Clark - Millefleurs with Putti, 2007 - Acrylic on canvas
Sydney, Australia - Prix de Rome marks the first time Tony Clark has created an exhibition based entirely upon figures.  Maintaining his overriding interest in the dialogue between art and architecture, Clark examines various architectural embellishments including several putti.  Their isolated heads slide towards the abstractions of Clark’s earlier Jasperware paintings based on Wedgewood designs.  Also included are a series of paintings based on the figures on the Portland Vase (a first century BC Roman cameo glass vase, which served as an inspiration to many glass and porcelain makers in the 18th century and since).  On exhibition (7 Feb–1 Mar).

Tony Clark has lived for much of his life in Italy.  He has exhibited widely in Australia and Europe for over two decades.  A major retrospective exhibition of his work, Tony Clark – Public and Private Paintings 1982-1998, was held at the Museum of Modern Art at Heide in Melbourne in 1998.  He was also included in museum exhibitions Documenta IX in 1992, the 1995 Australian Perspecta.  His work is held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of Western Australia as well as many private collections in both Australia and Europe.  Tony Clark has been exhibiting with Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery since 1983.
