Santa Monica, CA - L.A. artists Travis Millard and Mel Kadel team up to present two solo shows together this February at the Richard Heller Gallery. Exhibition Dates: February 9th – March 8th, 2008. Opening Reception: Saturday February 9th, 2008 5-7pm.
Travis Millard has a BFA in Illustration/Printmaking from Kansas University in 1998. He founded the Fudge Factory Comics operation in 1997, and has been producing small run zines, prints and comics under the umbrella since then. Recently his work was selected for the "Cult Fiction" exhibition, curated by the Hayward gallery in London with a focus on the cross-over between comics & fine art, and is traveling throughout the UK. In the summer of 07, Narrow Books released "Hey Fudge", a 240 page solo collection of personal comics and drawings. There is a light-hearted yet compulsive quality to his sometimes raw and abrasive subjects.
Mel Kadel grew up in the Pennsylvania suburbs and graduated with a B.F.A. from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA. She started out in L.A. by showing work in small galleries and cafes, and working with bands on their record covers. Now her work has been exhibited widely across the U.S. and abroad, and has been published in numerous books and magazines. Mel's drawings are made using stained or found paper, tiny pens, q-tips, and glue. The figures in her work portray a strength and defiance in an extended narrative that continues to evolve.
