Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts opens 'The Light Project' in Saint Louis

St.Louis, MO - The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts announces The Light Project, a series of outdoor light installations presented in conjunction with the current exhibition, Dan Flavin: Constructed Light.  This project is headed by the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, in collaboration with contemporary art curators from the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and White Flag Projects. The initiative is motivated by the Pulitzer’s commitment to the arts and interest in social and urban revitalization, beginning with its own Grand Center neighborhood in midtown St. Louis. The Light Project will illuminate the area surrounding the block of Washington Boulevard where the Pulitzer is located.

International in scope, the project will include installations by Ann Lislegaard (Copenhagen, Denmark), Sebastian Hungerer & Rainer Kehres (Karlsruhe, Germany), Spencer Finch (New York) and Jason Peters (New York). The artists will present site-responsive outdoor installations which employ and/or reference projected, emanating, or natural light. The works will be on view through October 17, 2008.

Ann Lislegaard’s work, Crystal World, is a dual-projection video installation, which will be projected on the back of the Pulitzer building. Her work is curated by Robin Clark, formerly of the Saint Louis Art Museum and currently Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. She also curated the installation by Rainer Kehres & Sebastian Hungerer, which consists of hundreds of lamps donated by the St. Louis community, strung together and lit within the burned church on Spring Avenue.

Jason Peters’s work, Untitled, is a large snake-like sculpture made of buckets which will be lit from within. This work is curated by Matthew Strauss, Director of White Flag Projects, and will be installed across the street from the Pulitzer, in the grassy lot on Washington Boulevard. Spencer Finch’s artwork, Sunset (St. Louis, July 31, 2008) includes solar panels installed on the roof of the Contemporary Art Museum, which will power a soft-serve ice cream machine on the sidewalk near the entrance of the Contemporary. The ice cream will be the color of a St. Louis sunset and given out for free. His work is curated by Laura Fried, Assistant Curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.
