Records Broken at Phillips de Pury & Company Contemporary Art Sale

New York – November 17 – The Contemporary Art Sale at Phillips de Pury & Company achieved stellar results with a sale total of $41,195,180.  The Part 1 evening sale sold 95.7% by value and the Part 2 day sale sold 87.4% by value.  Contemporary Stars Shine at Phillips de Pury & Company Contemporary Art Sale: 17 Artists’ Records Broken in Part 1 Evening Sale and a Further 44 Records Set in Part 2 Sale.  The top lots of the evening sale set records for the artists and included Mike Kelley’s Deodorized Mass With Satellites, 1991-1999 which sold for $2,704,000; Andreas Gursky’s, 99 Cent 11, Diptychon, 2001 which sold for $2,480,000; Richard Prince’s, Tender Nurse, 2002 which sold for $2,256,000 and Christoper Wool’s, Hole in My Fuckin’ Head (W31)1992 which sold for $1,696,000.

Untitled #4 by Agnes Martin, 1992 sold for $1,808,000 and Julian Schnabel’s, Bob’s World, 1980 sold for $822,400 and set a record for the artist. The sale confirms Phillips de Pury & Company’s leading position in the sale of the most cutting-edge art available to market today.

Artists that achieved results well above their high estimates included new to the market Mark Handforth, whose fluorescent wall sculpture, Starman, 2004 fetched $114, 000 with a high estimate of $30,000.  Jim Lambie’s, Green Door, 2004 sold for $144, 000 with a high estimate of $80,000.  Banks Violette’s Untitled (Scoreboard), 2005 sold for 117, 600 with a high estimate of $70,000.  And, Electric Angel, 1999 by George Condo sold for $228,000 with a high estimate of $60,000.

The Part 2 portion of the sale proved a successful sale both for established artists and emerging talent.  Two works by Christopher Wool sold well about their estimates: Untitled (S60), 1990 estimated between $40,000-60,000 sold for $102,000 and Untitled (P94), 1989 estimated between $100,000-150,000 sold for $284,800.  Richard Prince’s painting, Untitled (Joke – A Traveling Salesman...), 1987estimated between $80,000-120,000 sold for $138,000and a second painting, Limp, 1999 estimated between $100,000-150,000 sold for $374,400.  Chloe painted in 2000 by Elizabeth Peyton was estimated between $70,000-90,000 sold for $204,000.
