London – Phillips de Pury & Company announces a London evening sale of top-quality contemporary art scheduled for February 6, 2007.  As work is currently underway in the company’s new premises, the sale will be held at Victoria House, Bloomsbury.  As part of this sale, Phillips de Pury is proud to present the largest ever single-owner collection of contemporary Chinese art.  This historic collection comprises major works from the seminal artistic movements of Cynical Realism and Political Pop that inaugurated the birth of avant-garde art in China and that are currently spearheading the growth of the contemporary Chinese art market.

In addition to being the largest ever single-owner sale of contemporary Chinese art, this collection is unsurpassed in its quality.  The collection features 41 works from 27 artists and consists almost exclusively of oils on canvas by the vanguard of contemporary Chinese art.  At the collection’s core are rare and significant early works, dating back to 1992, by the most sought-after Chinese artists including Fang Lijun, Li Shan, Liu Wei, Tang Zhigang, Wang Guangyi, Yue Minjun, Zeng Fanzhi, and Zhang Xiaogang.  Many of the featured works are centerpieces from critically acclaimed and widely exhibited series such as Zhang Xiaogang’s Bloodlines Series, Zeng Fanzhi’s Mask Series, Wang Guangyi’s Great Criticism, Qi Zhilong’s Consumer Icons, and Li Shan’s Rouge Series.  Together.
