Scottsdale, AZ - Pedro Meyer’s Heresies is a retrospective of the beautiful and groundbreaking work of one of Mexico’s preeminent photographers. Pedro Meyer was one of the first photographers in the world to experiment with the digital manipulation of imagery in the early 1990s. His photographs were initially considered an affront to documentary traditions and to the esteemed history of “straight” photography in Mexico. Meyer consistently tests the limits of truth, fiction and reality. He often combines photographic elements from disparate times and places to arrive at a different or higher truth. His oft-expressed contention that all photographs — digitally manipulated or not — are equally “true” and “untrue” has been labeled “heretical” by the orthodox documentary photography community, no matter how forward-thinking his activity has proven to be from the perspective of the 21st century.

Pedro Meyer Independence Street, 1991 from the series Meyer’s personal innovations in the field of digital photography include creating the first CDROM to combine sound and images; creating the first digital prints ever made; and, in 1994, creating his renowned online photography forum, www.zonezero.com — the most-visited photographic-content site on the web. Meyer’s trailblazing work on behalf of Latin American photographers, beginning in the late 1970s, effectively organized and elevated photography as an art form across an entire continent.

SMoCA is proud to participate in this exhibition, which will open simultaneously in 100 museums worldwide, as befitting Meyer’s global approach and international subject matter. The project sets a new paradigm for exhibiting photographs in museums and creates a virtual dialog among a cross-national network of peers. Each museum selects its exhibitions from a vast pool of hundreds of images Meyer has made available on his web site, creating a focus most appropriate for its audience and mission. The artist then prints the chosen photographs (as many as 70) as archival digital ink-jet prints for the museum, and donates them to the institution’s permanent collection. The great generosity underlying this concept as well as Meyer’s creative use of the web indicate both his interest in working outside the usual cultural marketplace and his true belief in open, international dialog. On view October 5, 2008 – January 18, 2009.

In the spirit of broad participation, SMoCA’s exhibition will be guest curated by Lara Taubman. Community-based education programs, with a focus on Chicano youth, will be coordinated by guest educator April Bojorquez.

Pedro Meyer, The Chain, 1979, from the series Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 7374 East Second Street in downtown Scottsdale, four blocks south of Indian School Road and three blocks east of Scottsdale Road.
