Sunday, 28 December 2008 22:02
Wichita, KS - The Wichita Art Museum will feature an exhibition of works by artist Patrick Duegaw in the Beren and Graves Galleries. The exhibition will feature paintings on sheetrock, and drawings over obsolete architectural drawings and on various salvaged materials. The images depict realistic portraits, large-scale interiors, and provocative artifacts. The exhibition is an ongoing documentary. It is part installation, part theater production. In place of thespians, objects, and a stage; it instead features painted characters, props, and a set. Likewise, the action taking place is rendered to imply movement, rather than actually a performance.
These static-theater productions have grown out of the artist’s present living and working environments at his studios in Wichita and in Montréal, Canada. The most recent Still Play ‘performance’ introduces “The Builder”, a creator who has fashioned a multi-faceted interior environment with a series of specific tools. The exhibition focuses on the metaphorical construction of the lives, and subsequent interaction, of a series of individuals, and the resultant process that becomes inherent in their co-existence.
Duegaw has had seven large-scale solo exhibitions at the Fisch Haus, as well as in galleries in Kansas City and San Francisco. His art has been shown nationally in many group shows. His work has been reviewed in Review and Art In America magazines, and has been featured in New American Paintings and Studio Visit. He was the recipient of the highly competitive 2006 Kansas Arts Commission Artist Fellowship in 2-D as well as the Mini Fellowship Exhibition Grant and was featured in the Portrait of an Artist campaign at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery in 2005. His work was also included in the Kansas Masters Exhibition and Kansas Inauguration Exhibition at the Governor’s Ball, both in 2007.
Exhibition Dates: March 15, 2009 – April 26, 2009
