Pittsburgh, PA - The of Art’s works of Italian photographer Luisa Lambri and Brazilian sculptor Ernesto Neto, two artists exploring the possibilities of minimal forms in space, are featured in this 57th Forum Gallery exhibition organized by Carnegie Museum curator of contemporary art, and curator of the 2008 Carnegie International, Douglas Fogle. Forum 57: Luisa Lambri and Ernesto Neto will be on view at Carnegie Museum of Art August 12–November 12, 2006.Luisa Lambri uses photography to investigate the relationship between subjective experience and architectural space. She photographs decidedly non-iconic views of the interiors of well-known modern architectural structures, focusing on the idiosyncratic qualities of seemingly insignificant aspects of the interiors to convey that our experience of perceived space is personal and interpretive.

The Maeght Foundation: Jewel of the French Riviera
Written by Tracey Lock-Weir Monday, 15 August 2011 21:38

The French Riviera wasn't always known as a getaway for the rich and famous. Under the glittery veneer is a subtle beauty that comes not only from the natural surroundings, but also the warmth and joie de vivre of the local residents.
The character of the Côte d'Azur began to change at the end of the nineteenth century, when neoimpressionist painter Paul Signac discovered the remarkable quality of the light in St. Tropez. Signac brought other artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Henri Charles Manguin, and Georges Seurat.
Farther along the Riviera to the east, the medieval "perched" villages of Tourette sur Loup, Vence, and St. Paul de Vence are veritable artist colonies. Matisse lived near Vence and designed and built the Rosary Chapel nearby. Marc Chagall is buried in St. Paul's cemetery. His mosaics turn up in unlikely places including a baptismal font in a church in Vence and the wall of a private garden.

Adam Elsheimer at the National Gallery of Scotland
Saturday, 05 August 2006 10:14
Edinburgh, Scotland - Adam Elsheimer is one of the unsung heroes of the history of European art. His paintings have an unmistakable richness of detail and invention – all the more remarkable given their small and intricate scale. Working in Rome, Elsheimer transformed every genre he touched – narrative, landscape and the depiction of interiors – and he played a crucial part in the formation of three of the most important artists of the seventeenth century: Rubens, Rembrandt and Claude Lorrain. Sadly, only a small number of his works survive. Perhaps because of this, there has been no major exhibition of Elsheimer’s work since 1966, and there has never been one that focused on his paintings. The Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London are now collaborating for the first time on a show that aims to gather together all the artist’s surviving paintings, and in doing so will offer an extraordinary opportunity to see all of his pictures together for the first – and perhaps even the last – time.

Alberto Giacometti at Art Gallery of New South Wales
Saturday, 05 August 2006 12:18
Sydney, AU - The Art Gallery of New South Wales brings to Australia for the first time an exhibition of some 79 works by Alberto Giacometti. Renowned for his relentless investigation of the human figure and his unique and singular vision, Giacometti stands beside Picasso and Matisse as one of the towering masters of 20th century art. On Exhibition 18 August to 29 October 2006. “One of the most original and inventive artists of the 20th century”.The 35 sculptures, 22 prints and 22 drawings in the exhibition span the two most intense phases of Giacometti’s career – the surrealist period from 1929 to 1934 and the post World War II period from 1947 to 1965, when he produced the thin and unnaturally elongated figures for which he has become best known.
The works have been drawn from the Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation in the south of France, which holds one of the most significant collections of Giacometti’s work. In 1947 the Maeght family opened a gallery in Paris specialising in modern French art and were passionate advocates of Giacometti’s work, holding exhibitions in the 1950s and early 60s.

Cristina Vergano~Figure of Speech~at Woodward Gallery
Monday, 07 August 2006 09:51
New York City - Cristina Vergano depicts an intriguing world where creatures, both human and animal, inhabit pastoral landscapes or rich interiors. How they have arrived at these places, she gives no indication, only implying in their serene demeanors that they now exist there, as in the classical tradition, solid and firmly planted for all time. On exhibition from 14 September to 4 November, 2006.In “Figure of Speech,” Vergano introduces rebuses, word puzzles, into her paintings, adding another tantalizing layer of meaning to works already dense with allusions. Letters of the alphabet dance across a visage or balance on foliage forming words that create statements or pose compelling questions.

'Factory Work': at the Brandywine River Museum
Written by Joseph Simpson Tuesday, 05 October 2010 02:18

CHADDS FORD, PA — Factory Work: Warhol, Wyeth and Basquiat, on exhibition September 9 through November 19, 2006 at the Brandywine River Museum, explores the fascinating collaborations in the late 1970s and early 1980s between Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and realist Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946), and between Warhol and New York graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). The exhibition provides clues to understanding these unique partnerships and offers examples of how these very different artists influenced and inspired each other.
Wyeth and Basquiat were young, independent artists with established reputations when Andy Warhol invited each of them to paint at the “Factory,” his New York studio. Warhol mentored the younger artists who, in turn, enabled him to connect with new audiences in an evolving art world.
Wyeth, son of realist painter Andrew Wyeth and grandson of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, had his first one-man exhibition at Knoedler Gallery in 1976 at the age of 20.

It assembles numerous and hitherto unknown drawings from museums and private collections, photographs, paintings, unpublished note pads and sketch books as well as some sculptural objects, among them »La poupée« (»The doll«).
