William H. Johnson's 'World on Paper' at the Amon Carter Museum
Thursday, 11 January 2007 08:14
Fort Worth, TX - From February 3 to April 8, 2007, the Amon Carter Museum presents William H. Johnson’s World on Paper, an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum that for the first time closely examines the artist’s remarkable printmaking skills. The prints, many exhibited for the first time, reveal the African-American modernist to be as powerful with graphic media as he proved to be with oils and tempera. The bold, lively and colorful works mark Johnson as one of the most experimental printmakers of his generation, and a related group of vivid watercolors and temperas further demonstrates the breadth of his graphic expression on paper. Two of the Carter’s works from its collection of six of Johnson’s rare serigraphs will be featured in the exhibition.“Johnson left a legacy of paintings, prints and drawings that ranges from European-inspired modernism to his own distinctive rhythms,” said Elizabeth Broun, Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Margaret and Terry Stent director. “His works on paper, in particular, testify to a restless imagination and powerful visual expression—hallmarks of an inspired American artist.

BP British Art Displays Artist Chris Ofilli
Monday, 10 October 2005 10:16
LONDON, ENGLAND.-Chris Ofili’s The Upper Room 1999-2002 has been acquired by Tate and will be a highlight of the new BP British Art Displays at Tate Britain. This major work by one of Britain’s leading painters is one of a series of new displays at Tate Britain , including new presentations dedicated to William Hogarth, the British Landscape, Romanticism, the Pre-Raphaelites, FN Souza and John Latham among others. The Upper Room is a landmark work comprising thirteen paintings on canvas, displayed in a specially designed and fabricated room on which Ofili collaborated with architect David Adjaye. The darkened room and spot lighting provides a chapel-like context for the arrangement and display of the paintings; the twelve smaller canvases line the two sides (six on each wall), while the single, larger canvas is placed at the head of the room. This organisation suggests Christ flanked by his twelve disciples. Each of the smaller canvases depicts in profile a monkey of the rhesus macaque species, with each executed in a different colour, named in Spanish on Ofili’s characteristic elephant dung supports.Vietnamese-American Artist Dinh Q. Le
Monday, 10 October 2005 10:17
NEW YORK.-The Asia Society presents an exhibition of works by the internationally known contemporary Vietnamese-American artist Dinh Q. Lê. The exhibition, Vietnam: Destination for the New Millennium—The Art of Dinh Q. Lê, brings together works produced over a seven-year period, including a selection of his signature woven photographs, more recent photographic, sculptural and mixed media projects, and a new installation of two, small-scale mirrored satellites. Reflecting the multiple perspectives of his background, Dinh Q. Lê’s work examines the personal and political conflicts between Vietnamese, American and Vietnamese American points of view. Born in 1968 in a small town in Vietnam on the Cambodian border, Lê and his family migrated to the U.S. in 1978 via Thailand. Raised and educated in the U.S., he returned to Vietnam in the early 1990s, and has been residing there for nearly ten years. Lê draws on disparate images to challenge American popular perceptions of Vietnam, particularly the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War). Works in the exhibition reference Hollywood portrayals of the war and depiction of Vietnamese Americans as refugees.Danks Street Galleries a Picture of Success
Monday, 10 October 2005 10:20
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.-Once the street used to resemble a ghost town on a Saturday - now it is a mass of families enjoying lazy breakfasts, browsing through galleries and choosing from world class provisions. Once a mass of derelict buildings and crumbling warehouses, Danks Street, Waterloo, is today the hub of a thriving community in the heart of the City's south. A community festival will showcase this tiny tree lined street of successful family owned businesses, galleries, award winning cafes and fantastic fresh and imported produce, supplying some of Sydney's finest restaurants. The Danks Street Festival will build on the reputation of this vibrant and happening community with fine foods, gallery viewings, wine tasting, ambient music and entertainment for the kids. Pivotal to the success of the Street has been the development of 2 Danks St which was bought by Leo Christie in the late 1990s. The street's business owners argue that the Danks Street renaissance is wholly attributable to the success of this venture.Physiognomy of the Second Republic . . Austria

Great Buys: at DeCordova Museum
Monday, 10 October 2005 13:35
LINCOLN.-Ten years after establishing the Art Acquisition Fund, the Museum celebrates with an exhibition selected from the many purchases made since that time. DeCordova has been a collecting institution since its opening in 1950. For many years, however, no restricted purchase fund existed for the acquisition of art. Instead, money had to be raised each time an artwork was purchased, and most works for the collection were acquired through generous gifts from collectors and artists. With the establishment of the fund, DeCordova has become more pro-active in its acquisitions of the work of contemporary New England artists. Director of Curatorial Affairs Rachel Rosenfield Lafo has selected more than 40 artworks by 35 New England artists. The exhibition includes paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and photography by the following artists: Ahmed Abdalla, Laylah Ali, Elizabeth Awalt, Doug Bosch, Harriet Casdin-Silver, Allan Rohan Crite, Frank Egloff, Sean Foley, Authur Ganson, Gregory Gillespie, Lyn Hayden, Steve Hollinger, Howard Johnson, Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick, Aida Laleian, Annette Lemieux, Sandy Litchfield, Jane Masters, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Michael Mazur, Joyce McDaniel, Laura McPhee, Abelardo Morell, Maud Morgan, John O’Reilly, David Ortins, Greg Parker, Roberta Paul, Scott Peterman, Scott Prior, Daniel Ranalli, Janice Redman, Dana Salvo, William Shattuck, and Arnold Trachtman. The Legacy of Homer: Four Centuries of Art
Monday, 10 October 2005 13:49
PRINCETON, NJ, AND NEW YORK.-The Princeton University Art Museum and the Dahesh Museum of Art have forged a partnership to present the exhibition The Legacy of Homer: Four Centuries of Art from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris . The shared exhibition provides a singular experience for anyone drawn to the tales of gods and mortals and to the rich legacy of classical literature in French art. With the Dahesh Museum of Art’s mission of reassessing the role of Europe’s academic artists in the context of nineteenth-century visual culture and Princeton’s commitment to providing an unparalleled educational experience to students and the public by engaging objects of art as primary sources, the show is a natural fit for both institutions. “The Dahesh is thrilled to collaborate with Princeton on presenting an exhibition that is so integral to each of our missions,” commented Peter Trippi, director of the Dahesh Museum of Art. “It’s especially significant for the Dahesh, in allowing us to broaden the context of our own collection by presenting these legendary, rarely seen works of art.”Hopi Katsina Dolls at Dennos Museum
Monday, 10 October 2005 13:50
TRAVERSE CITY, MI.-The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan will present the exhibition. Vital Spirit: The Hopi Katsina Doll is an exhibition showcasing a portion of a recently gifted Katsina Doll collection to the Dennos Museum Center by H. Barry Levine of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. To the Hopi Indians of Arizona, the Katsina dolls are manifestations of messengers from the spirit world. They are visual representations of the invisible spirits that assist the Hopi with the rigors of life. The Hopi have evolved ceremonies that center on these spiritual beings known as the “katsina.” There are hundreds of these kastina spirits represented in doll form traditionally carved from cottonwood root by Hopi men. This unique exhibition will explore the role of the Hopi katsina doll and reveal its fundamental cultural significance.Durga: Avenging Goddess, Nurturing Mother
Monday, 10 October 2005 13:51
PASADENA, CA.-The Norton Simon Museum presents Durga: Avenging Goddess, Nurturing Mother, a 5,000-square-foot exhibition exploring the many incarnations of the great Hindu goddess Durga and the ways she is depicted throughout South and Southeast Asia. The exhibition opening this fall will coincide with Durga Puja, a 10-day festival honoring the goddess that is held every autumn in Bengal and in communities throughout the world. Approximately 70 artworks from India, Tibet, Nepal and Southeast Asia will be featured, among them rare works on paper including watercolor folios and folding manuscripts, a festival altar and exceptional bronze and stone sculpture, many of which have never been seen by the public. These works illustrate the dual nature of the goddess, that is, Durga as a fierce and strong warrior, bearing a variety of weapons in her many hands while she battles a host of demons, and Durga as a loving and protective mother, playfully caressing her young child or holding an abundance of fruit, which symbolizes her powerful fertility. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum will present a series of public programs, including lectures, dance performances, children’s workshops, a symposium, a film screening, and exhibition walkthroughs.American Impressions: Arcadian Vision Paintings
Monday, 10 October 2005 14:09
CHATTANOOGA, TN.-The works of many of America's most important painters at the turn of the twentieth century will be on view in American Impressions: An Arcadian Vision, Paintings from the Akron Art Museum at the Hunter Museum of American Art. "The exhibition American Impressions gives our audience the rare opportunity to see 35 works by some of the best-loved American artists from the late 19th century, including William Merritt Chase, Thomas Dewing, George Inness, and Childe Hassam," said Hunter Museum Chief Curator, Ellen Simak. "This exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to see the range of artwork produced at this time. Some of the most beautiful paintings in the show are by Impressionist artists. Frederick Frieseke’s Through the Vines, for example, uses a sparkling, colorful style to create this portrait of his wife, Sadie. On the other hand, artists such as Ralph Albert Blakelock and Elihu Vedder followed their own inner vision making moody, rather mysterious paintings.”Read more: [[American Impressions: Arcadian Vision Paintings]]
