Oklahoma City, OK - Modern and Contemporary American Prints will exhibit thirty exceptional works dating from the 1960s to the present. Many prints in the exhibition were created during the revival of printmaking that began in the United States in the 1960s. This revival led a number of artists to create fine-art prints and encouraged an interest in printmaking that has continued to the present. On exhibit until 15 April, 2007 at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
The exhibition includes works by Pop artists, such as Larry Rivers, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist, as well as more recent works by Terry Winters, Suzanne McClelland, and Elizabeth Murray. It also displays a variety of techniques, including intaglio, lithograph, and silkscreen. While some artists utilized a number of these techniques in their work, artists such as Murray experimented with the use of three-dimensional, shaped prints.“During the 1960s, artists began to experiment with various printing techniques and were encouraged by a growing number of collaborative printmaking workshops,” said Associate Curator Alison Amick. “One such workshop established around this time was Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), founded by Tatyana Grosman in West Islip, Long Island, New York in 1960. She was instrumental in introducing leading artists, such as Johns, Rauschenberg, and Rosenquist, to printmaking as an art form and encouraged their experimentation in this medium.”
Prints by Winters, McClelland, and Murray were purchased from ULAE following the 2004 ULAE: The Print Show exhibition. The prints were carefully selected, with the input of Museum visitors, for their contribution to the Museum’s collection of contemporary American prints. Other highlights of the exhibition include the recent gift of Sam Francis’ lithograph Living in Our Own Light by Dr. and Mrs. Gary Roberts and Jasper Johns’ lithograph series Fragment – According to What. This series of six lithographs has never been exhibited and is derived from Johns’ 1964 painting titled According to What. All works in the exhibition have been drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection.
