Raleigh, N.C. - On March 18, the North Carolina Museum of Art presents The BIG Picture, an exhibition featuring large-format contemporary photography by 13 national and international artists. From digitally contrived settings, to images of enormous landscapes, The BIG Picture displays 23 photographs that re-define and stretch the boundaries of the medium.

In conjunction with The BIG Picture, the Museum presents its first exhibition-related interactive on-line component (found at www.ncartmuseum.org), which will allow virtual visitors to connect with the artists and view their work. The on-line feature will include Pod cast interviews with selected artists, collectors, and curators; a downloadable gallery guide; an interactive message board; and other content. One artist will be featured at a time and new content will be posted throughout the exhibition.

The BIG Picture highlights several recent acquisitions from the Museum’s expanding collection of contemporary photography, along with loans from North Carolina collectors Allen G. Thomas, Jr., of Wilson, and Dr. Carlos Garcia-Velez of Raleigh.

With their vibrant colors and large size—the photographs range in size from 27 in. by 28 in. to 72 in. by 87 in.—the works are innovative, visually compelling, and provocative. The featured artists experiment with size, subject matter, and technique, and many utilize new media and digital technology, such as digital manipulation and digital printing.

On the heels of the Contemporary North Carolina Photography from the Museum’s Collection exhibition, which opened in 2006, The BIG Picture shows visitors the depth and scope of the Museum’s growing photography collection.

The photographs in The BIG Picture are thematically diverse and explore issues such as personal identity, race, the changing landscape of cities, systems of power, mass consumption, the role of women in society, and the passage of time.

The photographs in the exhibition comprise a survey of contemporary photography—portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, and digitally fabricated worlds—by local artists, such as elin o’ Hara slavick, of Chapel Hill, as well as international photographers. Other artists represented in the exhibition include Gregory Crewdson, Anthony Goicolea, Todd Hido, Chris Jordan, Sze Tsung Leong, Rosemary Laing, Vera Lutter, Sarah Pickering, Paul Shambroom, Lorna Simpson, Kerry Skarbakka, and Massimo Vitalli.

The BIG Picture opens March 18 and continues through September 2, 2007. The free exhibition is located in the Entrance-Level Gallery.  Additional information about the Museum or The BIG Picture is available on the Museum Web site at www.ncartmuseum.org/
