Dublin, Ireland - Michael Kane (b. 1935, Co. Wicklow) sees painting as a conductor of meaning in human experience. His work is uncompromisingly figurative. He does not particularly stress figure or ground but both seem larger and more mythical than ordinary reality. Kane’s figures make exaggerated gestures, and are themselves fashioned by large painterly gestures - yet his visceral execution draws profoundly on the intellect. Exhibition at Rubicon Gallery 24th November – 20th December 2008.

Michael Kane has decided opinions on the world, and he discloses his vision with conviction. His imagery is infused with biblical and mythological references played out on a skeletal Dublin stage. Kane has lived virtually all of his life in this city and it can be felt in the atmosphere and imagery of his works. Over four decades he has exhibited extensively internationally and in 1996 a retrospective at Royal Hibernian Academy ran concurrently with a major exhibition of new work at The Irish Museum of Modern Art.

A major publication about the artist Michael Kane will be launched at Rubicon Gallery on 10 th December 2008 (6-8pm). This 80-page coffee table monography, covering major works from 1950’s today, with an essay by Yvonne Scott (Director Trinity Irish Art Research Centre TCD), an interview with the artist by Sean Kissane (Curator Irish Museum of Modern Art) and a foreword Anthony Cronin.

Rubicon Gallery annually presents ten exhibitions in Dublin, solo-projects in the main with some curated events and produces 4-6 publications. The Gallery participates in International Art Fairs, commissioning new works and introducing Irish artists in Europe & the Rest of World.
