Winterthur, Switzerland - 2008 marks Max Bill’s 100th birthday. A native of Winterthur, he began studying at the Bauhaus in 1926, launching a career in the 1930s that proved him to be a homo universalis. He was not only a painter and sculptor but also an architect, a teacher, a photographer and a designer of posters and industrial products. Even before he died in 1994, there was no denying the extent of his influence on the cultural life of the 20th century.
The rich diversity of Max Bill’s oeuvre is represented in two exhibitions. A retrospective of his paintings and sculptures at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur is complemented by an exhibition devoted to Max Bill, the designer, in the neighboring Gewerbemuseum. Accompanying events will be organized at the two museums and elsewhere as well. During his lifetime, Bill organized his exhibitions himself, showing mostly work from his own studio. Now for the first time the Kunstmuseum is presenting works from public and private collections that reveal the basic traits of Bill’s concrete art.Supported by Credit Suisse, partner of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. Max Bill, magische chromographie, 1944–1946. On exhibition through 12 May, 2008.
