artwork: Pedro Lawn ArtCharlotte, NC - In addition to the exhibitions inside the McColl Center for Visual Art’s galleries, works by accomplished regional artists can also be seen on the front lawn.

Starting July 29, we will feature the work of Doug McAbee – a sculptor who lives and works in Spartanburg, SC.  Doug holds a BA in Art and an MFA in Sculpture from Winthrop University where he is now an adjunct faculty member.  Doug and his work have been featured in The Rock Hill Herald, The Charlotte Observer, Channel 4 Greenville and Spartanburg Magazine.  Some of his work can be seen at the First Citizens Bank Main Lobby in Uptown Charlotte.

McAbee’s large sculptures can be described as whimsical, fun, and animated and his colors are bold and expressive.  He uses imagery that seems familiar yet hovers just beyond recognition.  “My work utilizes bold color and familiar imagery as powerful tools for communication,” says Doug.  “Initially attracted by the brightness of the colors, viewers are left to consider the logical or illogical relationship between the colors and the images.”

McColl Center for Visual Art is advancing creativity through artist residencies, exhibitions and other educational programs about contemporary art.  The Center provides transforming experiences for visual artists, individuals who visit the Center and our broader community.  Visit McColl Center for Visual Art at : http://www.mccollcenter.org/welcome.cfm
