Newcastle upon Tyne, UK - Highlights from the Laing Art Gallery’s outstanding collection of paintings, including works by Laura and Harold Knight and David Bomberg, will be on show as part of a new exhibition opening on 15 December. Seasons: Paintings from the Laing Collection explores artists’ depiction of the changing seasons, and includes local scenes such as Cullercoats, painted by John Wilson Carmichael.
Julie Milne, curator of the Laing Art Gallery, says:
“This new exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the Laing’s best-loved paintings".
“It is a diverse exhibition and visitors will be able to see paintings in a wide range of styles, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.”
Works on display by Laura Knight include The Beach and A Dark Pool both painted by Knight while she was working in the Newlyn artists’ colony in Cornwall.
North East artist Ralph Hedley’s work is also on display, including Threshing the Gleanings, a depiction of North East farm workers, and Barred Out, a painting of school children enjoying the North East custom of barring the teacher from the classroom on 29 May until the holidays for the next year had been agreed.
The exhibition will also include a contemporary intervention by North Eastern artist Jennifer Allinson.
The exhibition is on show from 15 December 2007 until 6 April 2008 and entry is free.
The Laing Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm. Admission is free. The Laing Art Gallery is managed by Tyne & Wear Museums on behalf of Newcastle City Council. Visit : www.twmuseums.org.uk/laing/
