Kimbell Art Museum Loses a Turner - Gains a Donatello

JMW Turner Glaucus And ScyllaFort Worth, TX - The Kimbell Art Museum has announced that it will return a Nazi looted painting back to its original owners.  J.M.W. Turner´s Glaucus and Scylla, painted in 1841, has been a piece of the Kimbell's permanent collection since the mid 1960's.

"Discussions between the museum and Alain Monteagle, representative of the Jaffé heirs, have been under way since last fall, Kimbell director Timothy Potts said Monday to the Dallas Morning News.  "This is a new discovery for us we didn't know it was from his family collection until he came to us last September."

The Kimbell acquired Glaucus and Scylla from New York's Newhouse Galleries in 1966.  It was among the first pieces purchased by Richard Brown, the museum's director in the years leading up to its opening, in 1972.  The painting will hang in the museum until June 25 when it will be returned to its owner.

The Kimbell Art Museum's most recent acquisition is an exquisite terracotta relief attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Donatello—The relief, which dates to about 1450 and is known as The Borromeo Madonna , is a tender depiction of one of the most popular subjects of the Renaissance, and one that Donatello did more than any other artist to develop...the Madonna and Child.
