Hong Kong - Karin Weber Gallery is delighted to announce that Inner Mongolian-born, Beijing-based artist Xue Mo, will be showcasing her latest body of work entitled Mongolian Portraits, an exhibition comprising luscious oil paintings of adorned, Oriental women in portrait. On exhibition 24 May through 14 June, 2007.
Xue Mo was born in Inner Mongolia and is now residing and working in Beijing. Graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), Xue lectured in Fine Art in Beijing for seven years, and then commenced practicing full time as a professional artist thereafter. Having previously exhibited to great success in Beijing, Singapore and Hong Kong, and more recently, in Los Angeles (MB Fine Art Inc.) and Vancouver (Diane Farris Gallery), Xue continues to be represented by MB Fine Art Inc., Catherine Asquith Gallery, Diane Farris Gallery and exclusively in Hong Kong by Karin Weber Gallery.
Xue’s captivating portraits of solemn, striking women share the dreamy demeanor and intoxicating mystery of Da Vinci’s ”Mona Lisa”. Many of the serene faces are backed by gentle, Renaissance-like landscapes with low rolling hills and infinite blue skies, while others have an iconic modernity against translucent dark backgrounds. Using thinly-mixed paints, even-handed brushwork and an economy of detail, Xue exquisitely reveals the beauty of soft skin and the textures of ‘fine’ clothing. Variously described as indicative of “Renaissance”, “Chinese Vermeer” and “Medici-like”, Xue’s paintings evoke a timeless elegance, a return to ‘pure’ painting, and by turn, a contemporary interpretation of formalism. Whilst lending themselves to a meditative contemplation that transcends age and culture, these paintings have a timely appeal.
