June Kelly shows Stan Brodsky

Stan Brodsky - Tuscan Series #1 - 2007 Oil and paint stick on canvas - 44 x 34 inches

New York City - An exhibition of colorful, evocative new abstract paintings by Stan Brodsky —vibrant improvisations of landscapes inspired by the artist’s world travels — will open at the June Kelly Gallery, 591 Broadway, on Friday, May 9th.  The works will remain on view through June 10th, 2008. The exhibition coincides with a comprehensive retrospective of Brodsky’s paintings from 1951 to 2006 now being shown at the Hofstra University Museum through June 6.

The June Kelly Gallery exhibition, entitled Visions and Vibrations, makes clear Brodsky’s direct involvement with nature, not just his conceptual ideas about its elements.

“Initially, I experience on-site observations of varied landscapes — Tuscany, Greek Isles, France’s Pyrenees, Israel and America’s Southwest, among others,” says Brodsky.  “The vivid color and light, form and texture conjure for me an immediate response to the scene and transform what I observe and sense into a vital, very personal and painterly response, rather than a description of a place.”

Brodsky refers to these spontaneous reactions as “notations” that later become the basis for larger work done in his studio in oil on linen or canvas.  But he says he does not replicate his notations, nor does he introduce any preliminary drawings when he begins a work.  Instead, in the course of artistic challenges that follow, he says, he relies on the feeling, sensations and visions that he has internalized from his initial observation of the landscape.

Stan Brodsky Sight and Sensations #10 Acrylic on paper 30 x 22 inches - 2007 His paintings, Brodsky says, are the product of his effort to create a personal, poetic representation of the natural world that, nonetheless, is independent of that world.

Brodsky, a Brooklyn native, lives and works in Huntington, New York. He received an MFA in painting from the University of Iowa and a doctorate in education from Columbia University.  He is a recipient of many awards and fellowships and is a professor emeritus of art and former director of studio programs at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

In addition to the current retrospective exhibition at Hofstra, Brodsky paintings have been shown in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including a major retrospective at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington in 1991.

His work is represented in many public and corporate collections, including : the Heckscher Museum, The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York; Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine; Long Island University, Brookville, New York; Delaware University and AT&T.
