East Lansing, MI - Kresge Art Museum is pleased to announce a small exhibition of personal letters by MSU alumnus, and former New Orleans resident John Scott, artist of Doorway to the Blues in Kresge Art Museum’s collection, written to MSU art professor emeritus Clif McChesney and his wife Jane. Scott was forced to vacate his New Orleans studio and relocate to Houston following Hurricane Katrina. The letters, written before and after the hurricane, are in his beautiful calligraphic script, which he speaks about as his art form now that he is no longer able to work in his studio. They are ornamented with wonderful pen and ink as well as watercolor drawings (even on the envelopes).
At times, John is philosophical about the meaning of art and the importance of New Orleans and his longing to return. Visitors to the museum can view the original letters and copies are available in a notebook for perusal. The letters are on view through July 28 in the art museum’s Old Masters Gallery.
