San Francisco, CA - On Friday, September 7th, John Pence Gallery, near Union Square in San Francisco, will present an exhibition of recent oil paintings by Steven J. Levin. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Friday, September 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The exhibition will continue through October 6, 2007.

Leading off our 33rd Fall Season will be the return of Steven J. Levin. Levin is easily one of the top classic American realists working today. A veteran presenter with the gallery, this 2007 show marks his seventh show in the twelve years he has been included on our roster. Along the way he has been involved in a myriad of group theme shows and become one of the most popular artists in the gallery. His works have been sold to clients throughout the United States, Canada and England. Levin has become a major player on the national art scene and has won awards and prizes. He has been featured on the cover of American Artist and has been covered in the national art press with increasing frequency.

This show will mark a considerable advance in the display of Levin’s talents. Few classic realists have mastered so many genres. Using soft, rich, harmonious colors, Levin’s paintings masterfully capture a casual, yet poignant sense of contemporary Americana not seen in the art world since Edward Hopper. Levin stands with very few others in one of the most complicated and admired genres – the interactive group scene. Alongside masters such as Manet, Degas, and Ingres --- and more modern masters such as Eakins and John Koch --- Levin has come forward with sophisticated compositions with figures populating scenes in museums, restaurants, at parties and also his studio. In addition to these adventurous new undertakings, Levin’s exhibition will include still lifes, florals and portraits.

The John Pence Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 P.M. On Saturday, the gallery is open from 10 to 5.
