Stony Brook, NY - Now through October 21, 2007 the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, NY will present Spectacular Achievements: Audubon’s Animals of North America, Selected Works from the Collection of the Museum of the Southwest. Perhaps best known for his intricate bird illustrations, John James Audubon, in 1830, began collecting material for an impressive study of North American mammals. The project proved more difficult than he had anticipated, as many native animals were nocturnal and their habits were hard to learn.
Spectacular Achievements: Audubon’s Animals of North America is a unique opportunity to view Audubon's lithographic works and to appreciate his skills as an artist, observer and interpreter of nature. Many of the prints in this exhibition represent some of the few remaining images of now extinct animals.
Spectacular Achievements contains 70 original, hand-colored lithographs. Accompanying the exhibition are four of Audubon’s bird illustrations from the Long Island Museum’s own collection. Spectacular Achievements is sponsored by Competition Automotive Group, which includes Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, Competition BMW of Smithtown, Competition Infiniti of Smithtown, Competition Toyota of Middle Island and Mercedes-Benz of Huntington. The Long Island Museum is located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, NY. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5. Admission is $7 per person, $6 for seniors and $3 for students ages six to 17. Children under six and members are admitted for free. The Long Island Museum is a member of the Smithsonian Affiliate Program. The Art Museum features American art from the museum’s collection as well as traveling exhibitions.
