Portland, OR - Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery will exhibit Brooklyn-based glass artist, Jeff Zimmerman, in conjunction with the Glass Art Society conference being held in Portland, Oregon. On view June 3 - 28, 2008. 1st Thursday reception, June 5, 2008, 5:30 – 8pm
Born in Ft. Knox, Kentucky in 1968, Zimmerman grew up at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado, where the dramatic mountain landscape shaped his aesthetics and appreciation for nature's effect on human emotion. Later, he studied at the University of California Santa Barbara, the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee, and the Pilchuck School where he was exposed to classical Venetian glass techniques. In 1999, his sprawling sculptural installation at the Robert Lehman Gallery in Brooklyn titled "Anthropology Museum of the Future" drew the attention of collectors and curators.
Since then, his work has appeared at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York City, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris, Art Basel in Switzerland, Design Art Basel in Miami and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He has also participated in presentations at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City and the Grand Arts Center in Kansas City. He was awarded a residency by the CIRVA contemporary art and design center in Marseille, France and has collaborated with renowned Italian glassmakers Lino Tagliapietro and Pino Signoretto as well as artists Robert Wilson and Robert Morris and the architect and designer Gaetano Pesce.
A five part sculpture from the Morphos series, based on biomorphic shapes is of special note. This series is about contrasting organic forms and fluidity with the visceral impact of color and stark white. The juxtaposition creates an original object with a post modern reference.
