Provincetown, MA - The artwork of James Hansen will be on view at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Curated by Pasquale Natale and John Donovan, the exhibition will feature works in all media. Hansen was a painter and sculptor working in bronze, gouache, mixed media and oil. He created abstract subjects while dealing with shape, color, and texture. On exhibition until 22 July, 2007.
James Hansen’s love affair with Cape Cod began in the late 70s. As a former Fine Arts Work Center Fellow, his first Provincetown exhibition was in August of 1981 at the Julie Heller Gallery. Hansen’s early work was comprised of wood found along the beach – a neo-expressionist style, somewhat rustic and totemic. He concentrated on sculpture, watercolor, painting, printmaking – it was deeply felt work that continued to grow.
Hansen’s creativity was boundless – he worked in virtually every visual medium and moved beyond the confines of even that broad spectrum. Hansen’s work was deeply connected to the AIDS epidemic which eventually took his life. This is the first solo exhibition of Hansen's work presented at PAAM. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
The Provincetown Art Association and Museum was established in 1914 by a group of artists and townspeople to build a permanent collection of works by artists of the Outer Cape, and to exhibit art that would allow for unification within the community. Through a comprehensive schedule of exhibitions of local and national significance and educational outreach, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum provides the public access to art, artists, and the creative process.
